ELC 2009 Winter Sessions

Januaray - February, 2009
Classes for individuals 55+ who have significant vision loss.

Tuesday Morning (1/6-2/24): International Cooking and Perkins Educational Leadership Program (ELP)

This year, teachers from 11 countries including Armenia, Croatia, Egypt and more are at Perkins to continue their training with children who are deaf blind. ELPs will share information about their homeland including recipes which will be prepared in the weekly cooking class. Class: 10:00-Noon. Tuition: $65. Materials fee: $10.

Tuesday Afternoon (1/6-2/24): The History of Musicals

What is a musical? From where did they derive? Who are some of the people who have made this art form so popular? Learn about musicals and enjoy listening to some of the classics. In addition, on two afternoons in this winter session, Book Club will continue, reading and discussing two books on tape sent from the Braille and Talking Book Library. Class: 1:00-3:00. Tuition: $65.

Wednesdays (1/21-2/25): Living Independently with Vision Loss

This six-week intensive course is designed for people who are experiencing challenges in their daily life due to visual impairment. Adaptive ways to accomplish tasks of every day living will be introduced. Techniques, devices and resources to help regain confidence and become as independent as possible will be explored. Classes will include both lecture and hands on learning activities. More information. Class: 10:00-2:00. Tuition: $150. Materials fee: $10.

Thursday Morning (1/8-2/26): Comfort Foods

In the winter months it is nice to prepare recipes which evoke a sense of familiarity and security. In this class favorite comfort foods will be cooked using the stove, the crock pot and the microwave. On some days the same meal will be prepared using all three appliances and the necessary adaptations/changes will be discussed. Class: 10:00-Noon. Tuition: $65. Materials fee: $10.

Thursday Afternoon (1/8-2/26): Latch Hooking

A very popular, hands-on craft! A latch hook pillow kit will be adapted and the instructions will be made accessible in braille or large print. Learn how to latch hook and how the adaptations were made so future projects can be completed at home. Class: 1:00-3:00. Tuition: $65. Materials fee: $15.00 for one kit.

Friday Afternoon (1/9-2/13): Writing Workshop

Telling Your Story:  Everyone has a life story! How many times have your children and friends asked you to record yours? Each week there will be a brief writing assignment with a theme to help the narrative develop and this will be shared with a caring listener. Learn how to record the story in accessible formats (e.g., audio-taping, Braille, large print, or computer). Limited to six. Class: 1:00-3:00. Tuition: $50. Materials fee: $10.

Location: The ELC (Elder Learning Center) is located at 45 Beechwood Avenue in Watertown, on the campus of Perkins School for the Blind. Participants will be responsible for their own transportation. Staff can help to identify options.

Tuition: A $10.00 discount is offered for an additional class taken on the same day. If tuition poses a hardship, please discuss it with the staff. An additional donation will help others attend and would be welcome.
